What rewearing actually saves

This is the post where the numbers matter most, so here is the honest position up front: the direction is well evidenced, the size of any individual saving is modelled, and anyone who gives you one confident figure for your own wardrobe is guessing. Here is what is known, and where the certainty runs out.

The claim, carefully

"Rewearing your clothes saves the planet" is the kind of sentence that makes people stop listening, and rightly. So let us take it apart.

Nearly all of a garment's footprint is incurred before you own it — growing or synthesising the fibre, spinning, dyeing, cutting, sewing, shipping. Wearing it adds a little through washing and drying. Which means the lowest-impact garment available to you, always, is one that already exists in your wardrobe. There is nothing to make.

That much is uncontroversial. The interesting question is how much difference it makes, and that is where you have to be careful.

Extending a garment's life

WRAP's Valuing Our Clothes work — first published in 2012, updated since — modelled what happens when clothing stays in active use for longer. Their current wording is that it reduces a garment's carbon, water and waste footprint by up to 20%.

Two things about that figure. It is a modelled estimate, not a measurement, and the real number for any given garment depends on the fibre, how often it is washed, at what temperature, and how it is eventually disposed of. And it is "up to" — the ceiling, not the average.

It also rested on an assumption that WRAP stated openly but could not test: that people who make more use of what they own buy fewer new things. That assumption is doing an enormous amount of work, and for a long time nobody had checked it.

The missing measurement

There was reason to doubt it. The designer Kate Fletcher's fieldwork on garment attachment found that people can grow fond of clothes, keep them for years, and carry on buying regardless. Attachment on its own produces accumulation, not reduction — a fuller wardrobe rather than a smaller footprint.

In February 2025 WRAP published Displacement Rates Untangled, which put numbers on it for the first time:

  • Repair — 82.2%. For every five garments repaired, roughly four replace a purchase that would otherwise have happened.
  • Resale — 64.6%. For every five preloved items bought, roughly three replace a new one.

Alongside it came per-item savings: second-hand jeans avoid more than 30 kg CO2e, repairing a waterproof jacket more than 45 kg, a wool jumper more than 16 kg, second-hand trainers more than 12 kg, a cotton t-shirt more than 7.5 kg.

This is the most important recent finding in the field, and it reframes the whole argument. The honest version is not keep things longer. It is keep things longer instead of buying. The remaining 18% and 35% are real: mending a coat and buying a new one anyway saves nothing at all.

Displacement is the word for the difference between doing good and feeling good. It is now a measured quantity rather than a hopeful one.

The per-wear maths

The money side needs no modelling, which is why it is the figure we lead with. Cost per wear is arithmetic: price paid divided by wears. A £60 coat worn thirty times costs £2 a wear, and that is simply true. How cost per wear works →

The environmental side works the same way conceptually — spread a fixed production footprint across more wears and the impact per wear falls — but the footprint you are spreading is an estimate, so treat the result as an indication of scale.

What our numbers are

Since we publish impact figures in the app, we should be exact about what they mean.

They are modelled estimates, built from published production footprints for each garment type. They express the footprint of one new garment you avoided buying — and they are capped at a single garment, so wearing something two hundred times does not accumulate an ever-growing saving. Wearing a coat a hundred times does not save a hundred coats.

They are not a measurement of your personal environmental impact. Nobody's app can be — it would need to know what you would have bought instead, which nobody knows, including you. What they are good for is scale: seeing that a rewear sits in the region of kilograms of CO2 and thousands of litres of water, rather than being a rounding error.

We would rather tell you that than inflate a number you might repeat.

The industry, honestly

You will often see fashion described as responsible for 10% of global emissions. That figure is widely repeated and poorly sourced.

The UN Environment Programme, in its 2023 report on the textile value chain, gives the range as 2–8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The spread is not vagueness — it reflects genuine differences in what studies count. The low end covers manufacturing; the high end adds shipping, washing, drying and disposal.

Two to eight per cent of everything is still an enormous amount, and it does not need exaggerating. Using the real range also means nobody can dismiss the rest of what you say.

The short version

Wearing what you own is the lowest-impact option there is, because nothing has to be made. Extending a garment's life cuts its footprint by up to 20%, provided the wearing replaces a purchase — and repair displaces buying about 82% of the time, resale about 65%. The money saved is exact. The carbon and water saved are modelled, per purchase avoided, and capped at one garment.

That is a weaker claim than most marketing makes, and a much more useful one.
