Before the app stores existed, Clueless gave us the wardrobe app. Cher Horowitz stands in her bedroom, clicks through a computerised rail of her own clothes, and the screen tells her whether the outfit works. It is thirty seconds of film and it has outlived almost everything else about the decade's technology predictions.
It has stayed in the culture because it got the desire exactly right. Not show me things to buy — every app does that. Show me what I already have, and help me put it together. That is a completely different piece of software, and for twenty-five years nobody built it properly.
With Alicia Silverstone confirmed to return as Cher in a sequel series, it seems a good moment to say: that closet exists now. It is on your phone, it works with your own clothes, and — the part Cher never had to worry about — none of it leaves your device.
What it actually does
No magic, no screen that judges you. Here is the real list.
- Styles what you already own. Photograph your clothes once; the app suggests outfits from them, for morning, day and evening, taking the weather into account.
- Clean cut-out photos, processed on your phone. Backgrounds are removed on your device, so your wardrobe looks like a catalogue and your photos are never uploaded to anyone's server. Most apps send your images to the cloud for this. We don't.
- Remix Studio. A flat-lay canvas — drag, drop, scale, rotate, swap pieces in place. This is the closest thing to Cher's rail, and the bit people lose an hour to.
- Capsule builder. Tell it your lifestyle and season and it picks the pieces from your own wardrobe that make the most outfits.
- Twelve-season colour analysis. A five-step read of your hair, eyes, skin, depth and contrast, done on your phone, retakeable whenever you like.
- Cost per wear and real impact. Every wear you log drops the cost per wear and moves the CO2 and water figures. Numbers, not vibes.

The honest tech story
Everyone says AI now. Here is what is actually happening, because the distinction matters and it is in your favour.
Closet Remix runs on eleven rule-based engines — colour harmony, body shape, occasion formality, weather, fabric, and so on — built on published research including the FFIT body-shape framework and the Sci/ART colour method. They are rules a stylist would recognise, written down and applied consistently.
What it is not: one large generative model, hosted somewhere else, being asked to guess at an outfit. That approach needs your photos and your data on a server to work at all.
Ours runs on your phone. The background removal happens on your device. The colour analysis happens on your device. Your wardrobe, your photos and your personal details are stored on your device and are not uploaded to us — we could not read them if we wanted to. Three small things do leave your phone, and we list all three plainly rather than burying them.
Cher's closet was a fantasy about convenience. The version worth building in 2026 also has to be a fantasy about privacy — a wardrobe nobody else gets to look through.

Instead, eleven rule-based engines — grounded in published colour, body-shape and sustainability research — run on your device. It means the logic is explainable, consistent, and works without your data leaving your phone.

Does my wardrobe data leave my phone?
No. Your wardrobe, photos and personal details are stored on your device, not our servers — including the background removal on your clothing photos, which is processed on the phone itself rather than uploaded. Three limited things do leave the device: approximate location for weather, subscription status, and anonymous crash reports. All three are listed in our privacy policy.
