On your phone, and nowhere else

Why Closet Remix keeps your wardrobe, your photos and your data on your device — and never on a server.

The Closet Remix app on a phone — your wardrobe lives on the device.

Your wardrobe lives here — on the phone in your hand.

Here's a quiet thing most wardrobe apps don't tell you: when you photograph your clothes, those photos usually go somewhere. Up to a server, into an account, onto a company's cloud — so the app can sync them, show them back to you, and, often enough, learn from them. It's so normal we've stopped asking where our closet actually lives.

Closet Remix is built the other way round. Your wardrobe stays on your phone. Not on our servers, not in the cloud, not in a database with your name on it. We designed it this way on purpose, and it changes almost everything about how the app treats you.

What "on-device" actually means here

  • Your photos and wardrobe never leave your phone. Items, outfits, wear history, tags — all of it lives in the app on your device, not with us.
  • Background removal happens on your phone. When the app cuts a clean photo of a garment, that work is done on the device itself — the image isn't sent off to be processed.
  • You don't need an account. No email, no password, no profile for us to hold. You just open the app and start.
  • You can take everything with you. Export your whole wardrobe — items, photos, outfits, wear logs — as a single file, and bring it to your next phone. It's yours to keep, move or back up however you like.
  • Delete means delete. Remove the app and the data goes with it. There's no server copy of your wardrobe sitting somewhere for us to "also" delete, because there was never a copy in the first place.
  • The only thing we ever see is anonymous — and only if you say yes. Sharing anonymised impact stats (the CO₂ and water a community has saved by rewearing) is opt-in, off by default, and stripped of anything that could identify you.

Why we think this is the right way

Your clothes are more personal than they look. A wardrobe is a record of your body, your budget, your habits, the things you reach for and the things you regret. That's a lot to hand to a company's server — especially now, when everyone is quietly wondering what's being collected and what it's being used to train.

So we made the boring, principled choice. We can't see your wardrobe. We can't train on your photos. There's nothing of yours to leak, sell or lose in a breach, because it isn't ours to hold. That's not a feature we bolted on; it's the shape of the whole app.

The honest trade-off

On-device living has one real cost, and we'd rather say it plainly than hide it. Because your wardrobe isn't in the cloud, it doesn't magically appear on a second device — you move it across with that export file instead of it syncing on its own. We think that's a fair trade: a little more deliberate, in exchange for your data being genuinely yours. You carry your wardrobe; we never hold it.

It also means we have nothing to monetise in your data, which suits us — Closet Remix is a Fashion Fusion CIC project, owned by a mission rather than investors. There's no quiet business model hiding in your closet.

The short version

Most apps ask you to trust them with your data. Closet Remix is built so you don't have to — because it never leaves your hands in the first place. Style smarter, own less, and keep your wardrobe exactly where it belongs: with you.

Closet Remix is a free wardrobe app for iPhone and Android, built in Doncaster by Fashion Fusion CIC. It keeps your wardrobe on your device, helps you wear more of what you already own, and shows the cost-per-wear, CO₂ and water you save by rewearing. From the Thread → more on how we work, and why.
